Overview

Gwenoldy –in English ‘Swallows’ Rest’ or ‘House’ - is a two bedroom cottage, lovingly converted from an 18C stone barn situated beside the 16C farmhouse of Coed y Mynydd Isaf.

Swallows nest in the Grade II listed farm building opposite the cottage and gather in the skies above in the Autumn before migrating for the winter.

The cottage provides luxury accommodation for up to 4 people and is an ideal setting for an “away from it all” holiday escape in the beautiful and tranquil Clwydian Range of hills.

Within easy reach of the cottage there are several walks across farmland and moorland, and Offa’s Dyke long distance footpath is only three quarters of a mile away.

From the footpath the spectacular views across the Vale of Denbigh, with Snowdonia in the background, can be seen.

Short Term permits for fly or coarse fishing can be obtained from several nearby locations.  For golfers, excellent clubs are available at Denbigh, Holywell and Whitford, all with 8 miles.

Those with an interest in history will be spoilt for choice of castles such as Denbigh, Conwy, Chirk, Penhryn and Beaumaris (on Anglesey) all within easy access.  To explore further the A55 Expressway provides quick access to the old Roman City of Chester with its shopping, historic sights, and acclaimed Zoo.  The beautiful mountains of Snowdonia are within an hour’s drive, as are the gardens of Bodnant and Ness, and Anglesey’s Sea Zoo.

There are several pubs with excellent dining facilities within easy reach: the Pwllgwyn in Afonwen (1m), the Cherry Pie in Melin y Wern (2m) the Cross Foxes in Nannerch and the Crown in Lixwm (both within 3m), to name just a few in the vicinity.

The nearby town of Caerwys, whose charter dates back to 1290, can satisfy most day-to-day shopping needs, including fresh meat, freshly baked bread, vegetables and groceries, a post office and a newsagent.  Main shopping facilities are to be found in Denbigh and Mold (both 8m).  Mold has a weekly street market and an excellent Theatre and Arts Centre.  Also within 40 minutes drive is the North Wales Theatre at Llandudno.

In Afonwen there is also an exceptional Craft and Antique Centre with a restaurant.

In September the North Wales Music Festival is host to internationally known musicians, and is held in the ancient cathedral of St Asaph.
